A Message from the National PTA - New Educational Standards

The National PTA presents the Parent's Guide to Student Success for grades K-12. These guides reflect Maryland's newly adopted academic standards in English language arts and mathematics.

Maryland is one of more than 40 states that have adopted these new standards, which are known as the Common Core State Standards. Created by teachers, parents, education experts and others from across the country, the standards provide clear, consistent expectations for what students should be learning at each grade in order to be prepared for college and career. Although Maryland has adopted the standards, this is still a very early stage of the process. The standards are not yet in place in our school district. Each state is working to develop a timeline and plan to implement the standards - which will likely occur over the next few years.

To find out more about Maryland's plans for implementing the standards and for a copy of the Parent's Guide to Student Success, please visit: www.PTA.org/ccssi The full standards are available at www.corestandards.org

Information from Mrs. Breon regarding the new standards: Staff is being sent to workshops over the summer to learn about the new standards and bring back to our school the relevant information so that it can be incorporated during our Professional Work Days over the course of the year. The standards have not yet been implemented and will be implemented in a process over time. County- wide there are pilot schools that have been selected to test new STEM components and there will be 1-2 schools selected to pilot foreign language components.
